This funky little flash app finds photos on flickr depending on what colour you choose from the pickr in the middle. I guess it would be useful for something, i haven’t really worked out what that is yet…but it is still cool!

Some crazy kinetic sculpture made out of everyday objects in a fantastically un-pretty style, although still somehow appealing.

…human and non-human, man and nature, urban and rural. Which ever way you look at it this is one stunning photo of a huge stretch of land photographed from space scrolling sideways as a long thin reality map.
The picture scrolls from rural landscape all the way into a bayside city, and shows all of the bits in-between…very nice!
This article talks about something which would totally agree with. The art of packaging…
I have opened countless computer technology boxes, some are a pain to get into, some are depressingly spartan others are covered in such garish graphics that they seem to want to overshadow the product itself.
The ones I really remember are the apple ones, I have been lucky enough to open both my shiny powerbook and a couple of new G5's (back when they were very new). The fantastic way in which they craft the packaging so it gradually leads you to the product. The way they have a (realistically pointless) picture of a life size G5 as the first thing you see when you open the box. At that time I had only seen the G5 in little images on the web, seeing it in a lifesize image then the real thing under that image was a very clever way to build the excitement.
The powerbook's white cardboard simply saying 'designed by apple in california' was again pointless but nice. The ultimate packaging seems to lead you through the opening process as much as a movie leads you through an introduction before getting to the main thing.
Anyway…this article pretty much says the same, arbiet a little more eloquently.

TypoGenerator is a funky little webapp which generates typographic images, such as the one above…

This has to be the coolest combination of electronics and communications. An artistic installation called Arcade which runs in a building in france controls all of the lights in the building.
When a passer by calls a special number (no doubt advertised on the building) they are given access to a bunch of classic games, such as pong, pacman, breakout and the gameboy classic tetris.
This almost makes me want to go to france to have a go…

A bunch of popular artists were asked to head down to their local thrift store and buy some piece of awful art for a buck or two. They then took them home and drew over them to make them more interesting.
Found this cool highlighter for Bush's state of the union addresses over the past few years. It is quite interesting to see the frequency of his buzzwords such as 'terror' and 'freedom' which seem to have lost all meaning apart from bad and good…

While working on a 3d project for uni, I came across this fantastic gallery of 3d work. Great inspiration, although on a slightly different level to what i am doing…

This is a pretty neat idea…people write/draw a secret they have been wanting to get out for a while. Then anonymously mail them to the maintainer of the website, who scans them and puts them online for a community to see.
Some absolute classics in here…
Ok, not quite as violent as it sounds…Just thought i would give special mention to a new blog called Lifehacker. It is basically a blog about cool software, hacks and techniques for improving the way your computer works for you. Cos who wants to work for a computer?

This is a fantastic interactive image based on some of Dali's works. Did i mention it was interactive? Move, delete, add, z-order…everything you need to create your very own dali.
(they also have a really nice domain name)

Some really nicely put together graphics here…worth a brief look, if only for the intro image
Found this article reviewing and comparing OSX, XP (home) and 4 linux distributions (linspire, mandrake, suse and xandros). Not surprisingly OSX comes out top, why they used the abysmal home edition for the test is beyond me.
It also highlites the point that linux systems still seem to be for the early adopters, those who can take it if their computer needs a couple of hours of tlc before being able to connect to the network, scan digital images etc…Anyway, they said xandros was the best of the linux bunch.
Personally I don’t think this is a wholly fair conclusion, although I think OSX is several million times better than XP, they have targeted the article at the entry level computer consumer concerned only with making the computer live up to the media hype. So sharing photos, playing mp3s, sending email and surfing the web are their main goals.

At one point it was simply myth, then it became rumor, urban rumor and now finally it is confirmed…A new series of Family Guy beginning in May 2005…!
