HP's Paper Thin Screens

HP have announced they have developed a paper thin screen. The screen which can show 125 colours is one step closer towards the fabled digital ink we have all been looking forward to.

Fascinating Mix

This website is a fascinating mix of corporate hoarism and anti-government subversion…talk about juxtaposition!

It also has some very humorous videos which stream really well…

MusicMobs

Found another music recommendation page. Similar style to musicplasma and gnoosic where you put in your three favorite artists and it recommends.

I was most impressed with this one though…To test it out I used 'Faudel', 'Abdel Gadir Salim' and 'Lazarperry'…I feel a search like this separates the men from the boys. Not only did it work, but it recommended 50(!) artists I might like, none of which I have heard of…fantastic!

It is based around the iTunes community, unfortunately you do need iTunes to preview the music…I prefer the surprise though :)

Fun With Favicons

favicon.ico - the little file which (if you have seen an apache log) is requested again and again. It is also the neat little icon which replaces the default 'page' in most browsers to accompany the page.

It was (as far as i am aware) invented by microsoft for IE4, to go with their much criticized channels idea for viewing websites in a more TV-like fashion. Needless to say, it didn’t really catch on…some say it was ahead of its time…anyway, enough browser history…the long and short of it is that it was an idea which microsoft only ever had rather sketchy support for and has now been re-awakened by the nextgen browsers.

Creating a favicon couldn’t be simpler, create a 16×16 image, save as favicon.PNG, rename to favicon.ICO and upload to your html root…done :)

Augmented Reality

Mitsubishi's latest piece of japtech is the wearable heads up display. Obviously modeled on the one worn by Boba Fett in Star Wars.

Wearable displays allow the user to visually interface with the omnipresent digital world whilst navigating their physical environment. It's no exaggeration to say that the SCOPO could very well be to the eye what the I-Pod was to the ear.

Tyranny of Email

An interesting piece about the tyranny of email distracting people from their work. Also outlines some common misconceptions as well as some simple things to remember when sending an email.

I maintain that programming cannot be done in less than three-hour windows. It takes three hours to spin up to speed, gather your concentration, shift into "right brain mode", and really focus on a problem. Effective programmers organize their day to have at least one three-hour window, and hopefully two or three. (This is why good programmers often work late at night. They don't get interrupted as much…)

When One Logo Just Isn’t Enough

A rather hideous gold necklace featuring every corporate logo the designers could find. A nice idea…

Mind Control

Something I meant to blog yesterday, but didn’t get around to…A company has just produced a system (currently in clinical testing) which allows a user to directly interface with a computer using only their mind (and a dinky little sensor attached to the motor cortex of the brain).

Bring a Bit of Google Home

Google has just released their Google Desktop Search. This is a search engine just for you people at home to search your computers. It works offline and indexes everything from files and folders to instant messaging conversations and stored webpages.

I would normally be telling you if it is good or not here…but the installation requested that I close firefox to continue…so that will have to wait.

Try it yourself

UPDATE: I installed it, denied it access on all internet ports (obviously…), it works…
My only comment is that it is a little freaky seeing the contents of your computer come up in a google style search window…

Ultra-personal PC

A company called OQO have just released an ultra-personal pc. This is something between a laptop and a palmtop…often known as a handtop.

So far it has had rather mixed reviews, and the pricetag puts it above most laptops in terms of commitment.

'The War on Piracy'

America looks set to launch another 'War On …' which it cant win. They decided they were doing so well in the 'War On Drugs' now they have imprisoned 5% of their population, not to mention the 'War On Terror' which they have all admitted isn’t winnable. This time are now going to war with the people who choose not to pay for DRM infested media, again, their own population.

The new powers they 'need' to do it include being able to prosecute someone for passive sharing (eg having a shared folder) as well as any company who creates a program or piece of hardware which enables such piracy. (eg apple…?)
